Setting YouTube chapters: rules, step by step and common mistakes
Chapters split a video into named sections. The progress bar turns into separate blocks viewers can jump to. That sounds like a detail, but it changes how people use a longer video and how it appears in search. Here is how to set chapters, which rules YouTube applies and why they sometimes fail to show.
What chapters do
- Viewers jump instead of leaving. Someone looking for one part finds it rather than closing the video.
- Search picks them up. Individual sections can appear in search results with their own preview and heading.
- They force structure. Writing chapters tells you during the edit whether the video has a thread.
- Analysis gets easier to read. In YouTube Studio the retention curve shows where viewers drop off, and the chapter names tell you what happens there.
For very short videos it is not worth the effort. From around five minutes with several topics it starts to pay off.
The rules YouTube applies
Chapters come from a list of timestamps in the video description. According to YouTube Help, three conditions have to be met before they are recognised:
- The first timestamp is 00:00. Without that starting mark no chapters are created at all.
- At least three timestamps in ascending order.
- Every chapter is at least ten seconds long.
On top of that, the feature is unavailable if the channel has active strikes or the content may be inappropriate for some viewers.
Step by step
- Open YouTube Studio and select the video under Content.
- Start a new line in the description with 00:00 followed by the name of the first section.
- Give every further section its own line: timestamp, space, name.
- Save and check the video in the player. The progress bar should now be split into blocks.
- Adjust as needed. Chapters can be changed at any time, including on videos that have been online for years.
Write timestamps as mm:ss, or as hh:mm:ss for videos over an hour.
Good chapter names
- Name them, do not number them. “Part 2” helps nobody, “Bleeding the heating circuit” does.
- Keep them short. Two to five words, so the name stays readable in the bar.
- Use the viewer's words. The terms people search for, not your internal jargon.
- Go easy on “Introduction”. The first section may well say what the video is about.
Why chapters do not show up
Almost always one of the rules above is broken. Check in this order:
- Does the list really start at 00:00, with no spaces or characters before it?
- Are there at least three entries?
- Is there at least ten seconds between two timestamps?
- Does every timestamp sit on its own line, in ascending order?
- Does the channel have an active strike, or is the video age restricted?
If everything checks out, give YouTube a little time. Chapters do not always appear the moment you save.
Chapters and your analytics
YouTube Studio shows the audience retention curve under Analytics. With chapters you can read which section holds people and which drives them away. That is how I use them in a channel audit: only once you know where viewers leave is it worth working on the edit or the structure. The description holding those timestamps belongs to the same job as the rest of the text, see how to write a YouTube description.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my chapters not showing?
Usually the 00:00 starting mark is missing, there are fewer than three entries, a section is shorter than ten seconds or the order is wrong. Active strikes on the channel can also disable the feature.
How many chapters make sense?
As many as the video has sections. Three is the minimum, eight to twelve is common for a half hour video. Each chapter should be at least ten seconds long.
Do Shorts have chapters?
No. Chapters are meant for regular videos. When Shorts and when long videos are worth it is covered in the guide Shorts or long videos.
Can I add chapters to old videos?
Yes. The description can be edited at any time and the chapters are rebuilt from it. On videos with plenty of views this is especially worthwhile.
